How you can manage paint colour variationsEdition 30: 9 February 2012 When repainting, many of us go to the paint shops to select a sample of colour charts in the hues that we like. Many of us go on to select the new paint colours using these same colour charts. However, did you know that not all paint types give the same colour as that on the colour charts? In our experience, there is usually a colour variation amongst waterbased and oil based paints. However, that variation is usually not significant. This slight colour variation usually results from the difference in sheen levels between different paints in each paint type group. For instance, waterbased low sheen paint (usually used on walls) is glossier than waterbased flat paint (usually used on ceilings). The glossier the paint, the more light reflects off it. This can result in the paint looking lighter. Our observation is that the colour variation is most stark between waterbased and oil based paints. This contrast is more pronounced with some colours than with others. This is because waterbased paints have a different make up from oil based paints. What does all this mean to you when you select new colours for either your home or work place? Avoid painting adjacent surfaces in the same colour but with waterbased paint on one and oil based paint on the other. For instance, avoid painting door architraves in waterbased paint and the doors in oil based paint if you wish both to be the same colour. The contrast can be quite apparent, which may lead to disappointment. Readers poll. Did you find this information useful? Click on your choice below and type in 'yes' or 'no' in the subject line.
