Want to prolong the life of the paint finish on your porch floor?Edition 29: 14 November 2011 The arrival of warmer weather has brought about the resurgence of exterior painting projects. You may be thinking of recoating your porch floor to freshen it up before the visitors arrive for the holidays not too far away. Many of us prefer to coat our porch floors a darker colour. After all, darker colours hide dirt far better than lighter ones. However, darker colours absorb more heat, resulting in more expansion and contraction of timber surfaces. This timber movement does cause the paint finish to break down more quickly. You can prolong the life of your paint finish by using paints that aim to reflect more heat off it so that the timber absorbs less. An example of such paints is that formulated in Resene's Cool Colour technology. Another gem is to coat the floor boards with a white undercoat before applying the topcoats of paint. Heat that is absorbed through the dark paint will reflect off the white undercoat. This means the timber receives less heat, reducing the impact of timber movement. Readers poll.
