So you think you are a bit of a DIY kind of person

DIY projects can be fun and inspiring, even gratifying.  However, they can also be time and energy consuming, sometimes even a disaster!

We all know of family, friends, colleagues or neighbours who are still renovating … three years since they started.  Their cars are parked on the front lawn because the garage is cluttered with planks, tools and paint cans never opened.  In fact, they’re not even sure if the colours they fell in love with three years ago are still what they want.

You can’t remember the last time they invited you to their place for dinner because there is just no way they can hide the gaping holes and works in progress throughout their home.  If invited, perhaps sitting on a trestle and balancing a plate of food on your lap isn’t your cup of tea.

In an article published in the March 2005 edition of Your Home & Garden magazine, some real estate professionals were asked what buyers really want; what factors help to sell a house.

The real estate professionals surveyed voted good workmanship high up the list of priorities.  Harcourts agent Alison Aitken of Christchurch said: If you’re not going to do a good job, don’t bother doing it at all – sell the potential to someone else.

Alison had marketed a house where open home visitors overwhelmingly commented on how well the renovation had been done, from the skirting boards to the kitchen and curtains.  Nothing had been skimped, said Alison, and it got a good price because of that.

Barfoot & Thompson agent, Di Lynds of Auckland said Know your limitations and get someone else to help.

We all start off with the best intentions.  However, how many of us can honestly say that after the first month, we’d still be that keen?  The weekends are already precious, without having to spend all of it working on your house.  There are other ways we’d much rather spend our time.

Painting is often one of the first projects that any DIY-er would not hesitate to do.  Anyone can paint, right?  The truth is there often can be a significant difference between a painting job that an amateur does and one completed by a professional … and the difference can be rather apparent.

Next time, you are in someone’s house, look where the ceiling meets the walls and where the walls meet the door/ window architraves.  Would you be happy with what you see if this was your home?  Then ask who did the painting.

In a separate report, we have listed 19 key questions you should consider when planning your DIY painting project.  The report covers factors, such as: colour, sheen, paint type, preparation and finishing touches – essential components to an effective painting solution.
