How to choose interior paint colours you’ll love
What a hot and dry summer it has been! It has been great for our exterior painting projects, however painting in the heat does come with its own challenges. Luckily our Auckland Master Painters are experts, and use the layout of the house and orientation of the sun to make sure they are not working in direct sunlight - and that our clients homes have a beautiful long-lasting exterior finish.
We are now taking bookings for interior painting, and recently chanced upon an article highlighting the colour trends featured in the recent Maison & Objet trade fair. We hope you love the bursts of colour as much as we do – they may even inspire your next colour scheme!
The Maison & Objet trade fair, an international meeting place for professionals in lifestyle, interior decoration and design, was held in January. Interior publications around the world attended the event and breathlessly reported on the trends to look out for and follow in 2020.
As experienced Auckland Master Painters specialising in painting some of Auckland’s finest multi-million dollar homes, we like to stay on top of interior trends and love seeing how interior designers interpret these and use them in our clients’ homes.
While tradeshows and trend announcements are a great place to find inspiration, following what is on trend can feel overwhelming when you are trying to choose colours for your interior. Making sure you choose a colour scheme that suits you and your lifestyle will ensure that you enjoy your interior colour scheme longer than you may if you followed a ‘hot’ trend.
Start with colours you like
Choosing your “favourite” colour can be problematic, in part because adults often don’t have a favourite! And even if you do, it may not make a great interior colour scheme. You can love orange or purple without wanting to splash these colours on your wall.
However, if you look around your home – in your wardrobe, jewellery box and art collection, or even kitchenware – you may find a trend starting to emerge. Even if this colour doesn’t work as your principal colour it can be a starting point for you to develop your own unique palette and can be used in accents or in patterned wallpaper.
How do you view your home?
The idea of home means different things to different people, and this is reflected in the way they use colour.
Is your home somewhere you retreat to from the world? Somewhere where you can relax and feel calm? In this case you may want to seek out teal, blue and calm green hues.
Is your home a reflection of your vibrant personality and you want your interior colour scheme to energise you? Then introducing as much colour as possible is right up your alley! You can do this with feature walls, using paint to create patterns, source bright wallpapers and pull everything together with cushions, throws, rugs and curtains.
Are you an avid art collector and your home is your gallery? Then you may want to look at neutral tones – creating a pleasing canvas to let your art do the talking.
What are you working with?
If you are repainting you must work with what you have, and not all rooms in a home are created equal. However, colour can be used to great effect to change the feel of a space. Whether you want to raise or lower your ceiling, make a dark room brighter, a small space feel larger or a vast room feel cosier, you can work a little magic with colour to make it so.
Getting professionals involved
Getting an interior designer on board can be a great way to work through any challenges you are having in bringing your colour scheme together. If you have already thought about the colours you like and have a collection of inspirational interiors that resonate with you, you will be well placed to start.
