Top Five Mistakes: Quotes – not enough information
Through our 15 years as Auckland Master Painters we have seen homeowners making the same avoidable painting mistakes again and again. These mistakes cost homeowners financially and can cause significant stress.
In response we have put together a special report, available here, to look at the top five mistakes people make when having their homes painted, and how to avoid making them.
Mistake 2: Evaluating quotes using inadequate information
When comparing quotes, it is essential to compare ‘apples with apples’. This can be difficult to do when the information included in a quote is limited.
At a minimum, a quote should include:
- The scope of work
- The proposed approach. This should include a description of the extent of preparation work required, the types of products that will be applied and the number of coats needed
- The proposed fee
- The Terms of Trade
When the quotes received are significantly different, it is important to check that both businesses have quoted for the same scope of work. Otherwise, accepting the lower priced quote could become a false economy.
Recently, Wall Treats and another painting company of similar calibre quoted for the same work and our quote was disproportionately higher.
In a follow up discussion with the customer it turned out we had been provided with an out of date specification. While we had quoted on painting timber weatherboards, the other company had quoted to stain them. The preparation work required for painting far exceeds that for staining – which resulted in the significant difference in price.
If you are surprised by a significant difference in price it is worth a discussion with your preferred contractor as you may find there are costs not included (such as scaffolding) or that there has been a misunderstanding along the way.
“While Wall Treats’ quote was the most expensive, they were the only contractor to provide a detailed breakdown of how the cost was allocated. When we assessed each item for item, it was clear that the overall quote was well justified.
They also gave us a clear outline of the process they would follow, which gave us confidence in the service they would deliver.
“Ultimately, we were very pleased with the paint finish that Wall Treats delivered. We would recommend Wall Treats both for the thoroughness of their quotes and for the standard of workmanship they produce.”
