Preventing mistakes is always better than trying to fix them. We’ve seen clients make the same avoidable mistakes, which cost them financially and can cause significant stress so we have put together a special report, available here, to look at the top five mistakes people make when having their homes painted, and how to avoid making them.

Mistake 4: Rushing into a project under duress

So often when people look back on what led them to making a bad choice there is a point when they felt pressured to make a decision without having time to think about it.

As we were painting the interior of a client’s home, she realised the new colour scheme would be complemented by updating the colours of her kitchen cabinet doors. We helped her choose the perfect shade by trialling a few colours on the doors and she engaged a spray painter to carry out the work.

She received quotes from several spray painters and decided to proceed with one that gave a price in the middle range. He told her he was very busy, and insisted she engage him right away and pay him 100% of the quote before he started.  Feeling under pressure, she paid 90% of the agreed fee before the work started.

The spray painter carried out an acceptable job, but throughout the project continued to give her the impression that her job was an inconvenience to him as he was very booked up. To add incompetence to rudeness he sprayed the kitchen cabinet doors the wrong colour and refused to make things right.

Good tradespeople are busy and should not be immediately available to start your project without a plausible explanation (such as another job being delayed or falling through). This means they have no reason to push you into accepting their quote without due time to consider it.

So if a tradesperson is immediately available, and pushing you into accepting their quote, you need to ask yourself why.

A painting project is a significant undertaking, so it is only natural to want time to consider your options before making a decision. You should never feel pressured to accept a quote or start your project if you need more time to consider your options.
