MPNZ workmanship guarantee improvements

As Registered Master Painters, Wall Treats are able to offer our clients the Master Painters New Zealand (MPNZ) five year workmanship guarantee.
In the past, registered Master Painters needed to apply for each individual project to receive the guarantee. MPNZ had to approve each application, basing this approval on factors such as the scope of work, the proposed approach and the products specified. Just like any credit or insurance application MPNZ needs to assess if the project is within their risk appetite.
Wall Treats has been making these applications for over ten years with a 100% success rate.
What is changing?
From 1 April 2021 MPNZ will automatically cover all residential repainting projects undertaken by registered Master Painters, up to $15,000 (including GST), subject to MPNZ terms and conditions.
Roof coatings, exterior stains and oils, waterproofing products, and any product where a minimum five year life would not be expected, will be excluded, as will situations where, through no fault of contractors, some surfacing is prone to unreliable outcomes.
New build painting projects and those where the value is over $15,000 (including GST) will continue to be applied for by the painting contractor you have engaged. The value of this separate warranty is up to $50,000 including GST.
How the MPNZ guarantee benefits consumers
With some companies offering extended warranties, and the provisions of the Consumer Guarantees Act, the benefits of the MPNZ guarantee may not be immediately apparent.
The major advantage to consumers is that with this guarantee they are dealing directly with MPNZ – not the contractor that carried out the painting project. This means should the painting contractor you had engaged cease trading for any reason, MPNZ, though the warranty company, will assist you with solutions. Without the MPNZ guarantee, any protection and/ or recourse you are entitled to will cease if the painting contractor you had engaged is no longer trading.
Under the Consumer Guarantees Act, only the painting contractor who carried out the work is legally obliged to offer the remedies you are entitled to. If the painting contractor you engaged offers you extended warranties, only they are obliged to comply with the warranty clauses.
Just like all insurance policies, not all insurance covers are equal. Protection is only as good as the robustness of the policy wording to the insured party’s benefit. Because of the reputation that MPNZ has to uphold, its warranty clauses are likely to be more consumer friendly.
