Herne Bay white-on-white repaint
Case study

A recently renovated home that needed rescuing
Located in the heart of Herne Bay, this striking bungalow had recently been renovated to a high standard. However, despite the quality of the renovation itself, the exterior paintwork — completed by another painting company — had already begun to fail. Cracking, flaking, and blistering paint featured across the exterior, and it was clear that the preparation had been wholly inadequate. Rather than accepting an inferior result on a home she was proud of, homeowner Libby Priscott called Wall Treats.
Preparation first. Always.
Because the paint failure was so widespread, almost every weatherboard on the exterior needed to be painstakingly stripped back before any new paint could be applied. There are no shortcuts in a situation like this — the surfaces had to be made completely sound before they could receive new coats. Furthermore, thorough preparation at this stage was the only way to guarantee that the finished result would stand the test of time rather than repeat the failure of the previous job. If you've ever wondered why preparation matters so much, our post on attention to detail and quality outcomes explains exactly why it's where quality is won or lost. It's also worth reading our post on why you shouldn't always use your builder's painter — particularly if you're mid-renovation and being steered towards a painting contractor you haven't chosen yourself.
A timeless result, properly earned
With the surfaces fully prepared, our team applied a timeless white-on-white colour scheme specified by Libby's design consultant, Helen Wilcock of Design Spec. The scheme was considered and classical — allowing the bungalow's character to speak for itself without distraction. As a result, the home was returned to the standard it deserved: beautifully presented, properly protected, and finished to last. What Libby said
Homeowner Libby Priscott summed up the experience directly: "The thing that impressed me the most about Wall Treats was your attention to detail and the conscientious and personable manner of the guys. The house was meticulously prepared for painting and we are thrilled with the final result." That level of care isn't reserved for certain projects or certain clients. It is, as a result, simply the standard we hold ourselves to on every single job — regardless of size, suburb, or complexity. You can read more about our approach on our About us page.
Frequently asked questions
Can Wall Treats fix a paint job that has already failed?
Yes. We regularly step in to remediate exterior paintwork that has failed prematurely — whether due to inadequate preparation, incorrect product selection, or poor application. Our first step is always a thorough assessment of the surfaces to understand what is required before any paint is applied. Good preparation is where quality is won or lost, and we never skip it.
Why does exterior paint fail so quickly after a renovation?
Premature paint failure is almost always the result of inadequate preparation. If surfaces aren't properly cleaned, sanded, primed, and assessed before painting, even high-quality paint will crack, flake, and blister within a short time. This is why choosing the right painter from the outset matters — particularly on a recently renovated home where the temptation to rush the painting stage is high. Our post on why you shouldn't always use your builder's painter covers this in detail.
Do you work with interior designers and design consultants?
Yes — we collaborate regularly with Auckland designers, architects, and design consultants who refer us to their clients. Our reliability and quality of finish mean we integrate seamlessly into a wider renovation or design project. If your designer has specified a colour scheme or finish, we'll work precisely to that specification.
Do you paint weatherboard homes in Herne Bay?
Yes — Herne Bay is one of our most active areas. We specialise in character bungalows and weatherboard homes across Auckland's inner-city suburbs, including Herne Bay, Ponsonby, Grey Lynn, Mt Eden, and Parnell. Our registered Master Painters understand the preparation requirements and period finishes that these homes demand.
